News Bite (a big mouthful today!)

  • Way back when Sufjan Stevens came down and played us a great show for the Sydney Festival he featured a track we’d never heard before: an epic orchestrated ode to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, The BQE. Well this October he’s going to release it! And he’s not just slapping it on a CD- he’s slapping it on a CD and giving us a DVD of some footage they put together for it and a 40 page book full of notes and photos AND a stereoscopic 3D view-master reel..? I’m not sure what i’m going to do with the last one but the rest looks great. If you want to go nuts you can also get it all on vinyl with a huge comic book.
  • Fuck Buttons have put together a new album, Tarot Sport and it’s due in early October. In September we’ll get the first single: Surf Solar.
  • Also due in early October is Exploding Head, the new album by the ultra loud shoegaze tinged sound machines from A Place To Bury Strangers.
  • 45:33 Remixes will come out in early September, it’s a whole lot of remixes of LCD Soundsystem’s 2005 release, you guessed it, 45:33. Which was the 45min and 33second seamless record Nike commissioned as running music.
  • Beck’s Record Club continues its awesome run of Velvet Underground covers- but apparently someone may have scooped what the next album will be: Skip Spence’s 1969 album Oar. You may know Skip Spence from his time in Moby Grabe and Jefferson Airplane. and what the most awesome news is that Beck covered the whole thing with Wilco! Let’s hope this is true…
  • The shortlist for the 2006 UK Mercury Music Prize has been announced, the bands are: Bat For Lashes, Friendly Fires, Florence and The Machine, Glasvegas, The Invisible, Lisa Hannigan, The Horrors, Kasabian, La Roux, Led Bib, Speech Debelle and Sweet Billy Pilgrim. Winner announced September 8th.
  • The New Moon movie (sequel to teen romance vampire hit Twilight) just got a boost to its soundtrack: the director claims that not only is Bon Iver contributing a track but so is Thom York!
  • And in more soundtrack news, apparently i missed this a while back: Daft Punk are making the Tron 2 soundtrack!
  • and actually it’s not called Tron 2, they renamed it T2ON and have now decided that it should be known as Tron Legacy. Whatever it’s called has been busy starting up some viral marketing. There’s some silly stuff going around the internet but best of all is the first teaser trailer has been released. It was actually commissioned as test footage by the director so he could prove to Disney that it would be awesome, apparently they were convinced, as the film is set for a 2011 release, you make up your own mind:
